Sri Lanka Coast Guard Rohana carried out an awareness programme for fishermen at Dikwella Divisional Secretariat auditorium on 28th November 2012. The programme was organized by Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Matara District Office.

The main focus of the programme was to educate fishermen on safety conditions of fishing boats, proper use of safety gears, life saving techniques and survival at sea.The programme also covered the recent act of 'hijacking a multiday fishing trawler by an armed human smuggling organizing gang, emerging threats, measures to counter and action to be taken in such eventuality.

Public has been further explained the vulnerability of sea passage to Australia and strict measures taken by Australian authorities in this regard.
